Hailing from Rostock–Laage, this heavily modified Trabant 601was VEB Sachsenring's entry into the Lightweight Fighter program in the late 60s. Due to its radical design, initial testing was held at Tonopah under a shroud of secrecy.
Sources reported exceptional post-stall handling characteristics and insane energy retention. A copy of the P-530 Cobra test pilot's report was obtained by BVR after the competition with one line reading in capital letters "DO NOT ENGAGE IN VERTICAL SCISSORS WITH OPIE".
Opie was later acquired by NASA for hypersonic research. Its current whereabouts are unknown.
